When I was in graduation and posted in Ophtholmology, once I went to ophtho OT, it was the first and last in MMC, there I saw the ophtholmic surgeons' doing cataract surgery in bare hands, though I did not feel anything about it at that point of time. Later I joined government service. We are supposed to organize cataract surgery camps. Twice I was the camp officer. It was almost 10-12 years back. At that time I was shocked to see surgeons doing in bare hands. I asked them the reason for not wearing gloves. They said(I asked three of them) gloves actually hinders doing procedure, especially while suturing. Now-a-days cataract is done by some sutureless techneques. For the last 1o years I have not witnessed catarct surgeries from close quarters.
Our own man is working in a place as ophtholmologist where incidence and prevalence of HIV is highest in the world . I wonder what is his protocol?.
