Under my PHC, there were many villages out of which one is Kanasina katte. It was true to its name - dream place. Fully surrounded by greenery - coconut plantations, areca plantations, sugarcane farms, rice fields. It had two hillocks. Standing on Hillocks one can see meeting of two rivers Tunga and Bhadra in a place called Kudali which is four kilometers from Kanasina katte. It is a treat to watch in this rainy season. Tunga fills early (in July) as Dam across her is small( pandu, in my country river is considered as female. I don't know how they are referred in your country ). Whereas Bhadra trickles until late August or early September. Tunga is clean compared to Bhadra (bhadra is one among the world's most polluted rivers). Each time I went for visit, I was forced to drink lot of tender coconut water and end up spending lot of time in toilet. Sometimes, people used to catch/hunt wild boer in sugarcane fields and send small part of dish made of it to me. The story was same in most of the surrounding villages.
Let me come back to kanasina katte. There was a small hamlet of twenty huts behind one of those hilocks. They belong to Golla community. One of their tradition used to give me jitters. When a pregnant female approaches EDD, she was kept alone in a small hut outside the hamlet. Food and water were supplied to her. She had to deliver and cut placenta and feed the baby all by herself without any help/assistance. Tenth(or seventh, I am not sure) day of post delivery, mother with kid were received inside the hamlet. In my, 6 deliveries happened with one maternal mortality and two infant deaths. Sad part is, I could not convince them for hospital delivery.
Kanasina katte was a nightmare for me.
Few days back I read in newspaper, this tradition is still there in the said community.
